WhatsApp BSP (Business Solution Provider)

A Meta-authorised partner that provides businesses access to the WhatsApp Business Platform API, handling onboarding, number registration, template approval and message routing.

The WhatsApp Business Platform (the API product, as distinct from the free WhatsApp Business app) is not something a business connects to directly in most cases. Access is brokered by a Business Solution Provider — a company authorised by Meta to onboard businesses, provision phone numbers, submit message templates for review, and carry message traffic.

What a BSP actually does for you:

  • Onboarding and verification. Connecting your Meta Business account, verifying the business, and registering the phone number that will send and receive.
  • Template management. Business-initiated messages must use pre-approved templates. The BSP submits them and relays approval or rejection.
  • Message routing and delivery reporting. Sending at volume, handling retries, and surfacing delivered/read status.
  • Session handling. Tracking the 24-hour customer service window, within which you may reply freely without a template.

The distinction that catches businesses out is business-initiated versus user-initiated messaging. If a customer messages you first, a 24-hour window opens in which you can respond conversationally. Outside that window — or to start a conversation yourself — you must send an approved template, and that is a billable conversation. Pricing is per conversation rather than per message, and the rate varies by conversation category (marketing, utility, authentication, service) and by country.

Choosing a BSP therefore matters more than it looks. Beyond rate card, the things that differ are template approval turnaround, quality-rating visibility, how cleanly the platform exposes the 24-hour window to your agents, and whether number migration to another BSP later is straightforward or painful.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the WhatsApp Business app with the Business Platform API. The free app does not support automation, multi-agent inboxes or bulk sending.
  • Budgeting per message. Billing is per 24-hour conversation and varies by category — per-message estimates are usually wrong.
  • Treating templates as campaign copy. Marketing templates are reviewed, can be rejected, and repeated poor engagement lowers quality rating.
  • Ignoring quality rating until messaging limits are already cut.
